Trade show communication as spatial brand strategy
RUD is an internationally active industrial company that develops chains and system solutions for lifting, moving, securing and conveying heavy loads.
For RUD, we develop a strategic framework for trade show appearances and accompanying events that goes beyond individual exhibitions. These include SMM, InnoTrans, Fakuma and EMO, among others.
The challenge for RUD’s communication lies in its diversity: different industries, target groups, product areas and sub-brands need to come together within a limited space without losing the overarching brand message. At the same time, every appearance should be clearly recognizable as RUD and communicate the company’s expertise in developing solutions.
Our response is a consistent trade show system that combines brand strategy, customer journey, product staging and spatial storytelling. We support the projects from strategic concept through to implementation and work closely with exhibition stand builders and other partners.
From product to application
At technical trade shows, as many products as possible are often displayed in order to make optimum use of the available space. For visitors, however, this can make it harder to identify the main message. In the brief moment when a stand captures attention, communication needs to be clear and focused.
For RUD, we therefore want to do more than simply present the product. We want to communicate its benefits, advantages and distinctive performance directly. Only when a chain carries, holds, secures, lifts or withstands extreme conditions does its true capability become visible.
Products are therefore placed in their application context and become part of an overarching customer journey. This makes it clear not only what RUD manufactures, but also which technical challenges the company solves.

Making the industry tangible
Every trade show has its own visual conventions. Maritime exhibitions are dominated by ships and harbours, while railway exhibitions are full of trains and tracks. Instead of simply repeating these familiar visual worlds, we start with the actual use of the products.
For SMM in Hamburg, we translated the world of docks, ship decks and maritime infrastructure into the exhibition stand. Metallic surfaces, references to shipping containers and technical details create a credible application context. Products were also staged underwater to make resilience, load-bearing capacity and safety visible.
The communication concept Holding strong against salt, force and pressure. captures this approach in a single line.

An exhibit that makes performance visible
A central element of the trade show concept is a massive steel beam that can be used across different exhibitions.
The idea is not only to create recognition. The steel beam also makes something tangible that is otherwise difficult to communicate with chains and lifting points. Even comparatively compact products can carry enormous loads. When a chain is simply suspended in a space, that level of performance can remain abstract.
The materiality, weight and sheer mass of the steel beam create an immediate sense of heaviness, stability and industrial load-bearing capacity. At the same time, the exhibit remains flexible and can be staged differently depending on the industry, theme and size of the stand.
We don't just showcase products—we show what they can do.
Products become part of the space
At InnoTrans, products are not merely displayed, but integrated into the spatial design. A curtain made from RUD chains makes their materiality, stability and physical presence directly tangible.
A specially developed tensegrity bench combines product communication with a place for visitors to pause. RUD chains are used as visible load-bearing elements, while the object also makes the collaboration with RUD Erlau tangible within the space. The bench is reusable and can be deployed at future events.

Many topics, one brand
RUD brings together different fields of activity, product areas and sub-brands. Each area needs visibility, while the overall appearance should still be perceived as one coherent brand experience.
For each trade show, we therefore develop an overarching narrative. Recurring colours, materials, exhibits and design elements create consistency, while content and priorities can be adapted flexibly to the context of each exhibition.
One system for many trade shows
For us, SMM, InnoTrans, Fakuma and EMO are not isolated individual projects, but different expressions of the same strategic idea.
Products are shown in use, different business areas are integrated into a shared story and reusable elements are developed intelligently over time. In this way, RUD’s positioning is consistently translated into physical space, turning individual exhibition stands into a long-term, evolving brand system.
Recognizability comes from a system, not from repetition.
